INQUIRY

SPECIFICATION

Lutein is an important antioxidant that can effectively absorbs harmful blue light and helps protect the eyes from damage. As a result, lutein has become a popular ingredient in children’s nutritional supplements. However, is long term consumption of over the counter lutein products by children potentially harmful to their health?

Recently, the Beijing Zhongke Guangxi Institute of Science and Technology conducted a special experiment of 14 popular children’s lutein products on the market. The experiment focused on sugar content, gelatin content, and the amounts of lutein, zeaxanthin, and other key ingredient. The results revealed that 10 of the gummy-based products had excessively high sugar content. To improve the taste of gummies, it often contains glucose syrup, maltose syrup, and other sugar. One of the gummy was found to have a sugar content as high as 50%. According to the World Health Organization(WHO), the recommended daily intake of free sugars for children should not exceed 25 grams. Frequent consumption of sugary gummies can easily excess the limitation of the daily intake. Excess sugar during critical periods of growth may interfere with the absorption of other nutrients, indirectly hindering healthy growth. Additionally, gelatin dissolves slowly in the stomach and may cause digestive issues for children.

Moreover, the actual content of key ingredients in some products did not match the label. Some of the gummies contained only lutein and no zeaxanthin. However, achieving the desired eye-protection effect requires a specific ratio of lutein to zeaxantin. Insufficient amounts or an imbalanced ratio can significantly reduce the effectiveness. In some case, the manufacturers may add artificial colors and flavorings to mask low active ingredient content, which could increase the metabolic burden on children’s liver and kidneys-posing, causes an even greater risk for infants and toddler.

Experts emphasize that lutein should only be supportive measures. The key to maintain a good vision lies in healthy eye habits, such as spending at least two hours for outdoor and limiting the screen time. Parent shouldbe cautions when choosing lutein supplement for their children. Gummy products, due to their candy like appearance and sweet taste, may be overconsumed, leading to nutrient imbalance. Liquid formulations, which typically have better control over sugar and gelatin content, are healthier choice-especially for children or those with sensitive digestive systems. If opting for gummies, always check the ingredient list and prioritize products with low sugar and no added gelatin.
